this was very entertaining, thank you! we have a snowy spell here, hasn't happened since 2010. still slightly above 0*C, so no natural ice yet (skating!!!). every night my 2 cats congregate on my 1-person Cold Bed and I really have to improvise space-wise. but these contently purring, warmly-furred beings are The Best.

Robert Falcon Scott (middle name didn't help much). how is it possible they went all the way down there without the means to make and maintain some type of fire, even a tiny one? didn't they think of having to cook (dinner and so on)? sounds like British stiff upper lip but without the servants. intriguing time-line - https://www.coolantarctica.com/Antarctica%20fact%20file/History/robert-falcon-scott-south-pole-time-line.php

That's a chilling timeline! Made me even colder just looking at it!

That is a curious point you make about how was it even possible. Maybe there is a Mathis-style fakery story in there somewhere. I certainly find it difficult to visualise how people can survive such a trip. I mean, obviously they didn't in the end, but they almost did.

Ah - and 'Oats' is spelled with an 'E' - Oates. And there was an Evans in there. Surprising how much one remembers. I may have to read up more about it now I've written it.

Cats are definitely small furry warm bedwarmers. Ours often gets into bed, except now she burrows herself beneath a blanket on the sofa.

I'm glad you enjoyed my rambling!

't was not a rambling at all, after all, it got me going off on a mission and to find out more about those icy trips. what were they (or more precisely: their sponsors - who paid?) trying to prove? perhaps it was the only way to make clear that there was very little future in doing research (let alone survive) on the South Pole. I find it very difficult to understand. much later the US military and admiral Byrd went there - https://www.history.navy.mil/browse-by-topic/exploration-and-innovation/polar-exploration0.html

and then there's an (in)famous clip of Byrd, in an interview saying that there's this seemingly endless ice-wall stretching beyond the horizon for ever (or some such. hence the flat earthers) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxYr7VzB5EY

enjoy ;-)

Coincidentally Byrd came up in something I read the other day, completely unrelated to this article. It was what seems like an amazingly fun conspiracy theory about Nazis escaping with lots of advanced tech and hiding out in a secret Antarctic base, and it’s them who is responsible for all the UFOs. And the idea that Byrd took a veritable army with him in order to try and defeat those dastardly Nazis but had to turn back, and for some reason started gibbering insanely (as you do)…

nah, I'm just exploring. why would Byrd say these things, why was he allowed to go on tv with it and how come those old recordings are still available on utube? we're all being taken for a ride.

Yep. I got round to watching that clip you linked to and I didn’t notice him talking about some great impenetrable ice wall.

Still, that’s flat earthers for you. Fun but dumb… Or dumb but fun. I think that’s a more catchy tagline.

that cheered me up no end!

"ca me fait chier!"

That would definitely have been a total pain in the arse - v true!

I missed that opportunity there - thank you for, erm, filling it!
